A 42-year old man, Charles Hamilton, who allegedly defrauded a company of the sum of N485,000 was Tuesday sentenced to seven years imprisonment by an Evboriaria Chief Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo State.

The convict was arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing before Chief Magistrate F.O. Idake

The magistrate, however, tempered justice with mercy when he gave the convict who pleaded not guilty to the charge an option of fine of N300,000.

During trial, the Prosecutor, ASP. Aigbedion Obakpolor, told the Court that the accused with others at large, committed the crime between December 2013, and April 2014, at Zeenab Foods Limited, KM 8, Benin-Sapele Road, Benin.

He said the accused, a former Manager with the Company, unlawfully converted N485,000 meant for the purchase of production materials to his personal use.

According to Obakpolor, the offences contravened Section 516, 390 (7) and (9) and 390 (6) and (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 48 Vol. II Laws of defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 as applicable in Edo.
