Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni on Monday said the police are on the trail of the gunmen who kidnapped Oba Yushau Goriola Oseni, the Oniba of Ibaland at his palace at Iba area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Saturday.
Owoseni, who visited the monarch’s palace assured the family that the king would soon be rescued.
He added that the police had gathered information that would help in the rescue of the monarch and others who were kidnapped with him.
According to him, the police could not use force against the kidnappers in order not to harm the king, adding that rescuing the king alive and others was their priority.
“The nature that God has blessed us with, some people have turned it to avenue for committing crime. Looking at the terrain, accessibility could be a challenge for the security officials. Destroying the creek will also mean tampering with nature. But we will continue to strategies on how best we can speedily rescue the monarch and forestall future occurrence.
“We are telling the fellows that had engaged in act like this that they should take opportunity of the platform that had been created by the government to get legitimate employment. We have banks that give soft loans to entrepreneurs. By engaging in this, they are destroying the community that had raised and provided them with shelter,” he said.
Owoseni said it was pathetic that most of those who engaged in this act would have lived in the community before.
“We don’t want to stigmatize. If you have lived in a community, earn your living there and your reward to the community was to destroy, desecrate traditional institutions and treat the elders that are expected to be repository of good things for the society, it is bad.
“They should have a change of heart and do away with criminality. Also, they should release the kabiyesi and others kidnapped for ransom. Are the kidnapped victims those who wronged them? On our part, we have continued to partner with other security agencies in the fight against crime. We will not also desist from partnering with the residents on improving security of lives and property in Lagos State,” Owoseni stated.
