The Enugu State Government said on Thursday that it has mapped out strategies to address poor performance of students from the state in external examinations.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Eze made this disclosure in Enugu while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House.
Eze said the government had introduced a uniform end-of-session examination in all schools in the state to check the continuous poor performance of students in external examinations.
The commissioner said that the move was critical in revamping the sector, adding that the state government had not been satisfied with the state of affairs in the school system.
“Every school in the state whether missionary, private or government shall be involved in this arrangement and we shall hold teachers whose students failed accountable,” he said.
The commissioner noted that the prevailing situation in the state could be blamed on some teachers whom he alleged were no longer committed to discharge of their duties.
“We have observed that many teachers no longer cover their curriculum for the term and when they fail, students will be at a disadvantage.
“Therefore, we have introduced a mechanism to monitor those who renege in covering their curriculum and this transcends both public and private schools.
“We shall commence uniformed end-of-session examination from primary three to Senior Secondary three in all schools across the state from next academic session,” he said.
Eze said that the state government was poised to providing a befitting learning environment and had awarded contracts for the construction and renovation of 300 class room blocks across the state.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Information, Dr Godwin Udeuhele said that the council approved the appointment of a General Manager for the Enugu State Marketing Company Ltd.
“Council agreed that there was the need to reposition the marketing company as it has been under utilised.
“The aim is to make it a major source of revenue for the state.
“Approval was also given for the engagement of Paradise Palm Ltd. to offer consultancy services to the state on outdoor advertisement.
“The approval is to enable government leverage on the expertise of the company with a view to increasing the revenue generated from the sector,” Udeuhele said.
