The National Obstetric Fistula Center in Katsina State on Wednesday said it had treated 40,000 Visco-Virginal Fistula (VVF) patients from 1984 to date.

Dr Aliyu El-Ladan, Chief Medical Director of the center, said this in an interview in Katsina.

El-Ladan said the center, established by a German medical consultant in 1984, treated between 50 and 60 patients monthly.

“We have three competent consultants that provide operations on at least two or four VVF patients daily.

“Our center is well known for its standard services in the area of medical operations for the VVF patients,” he said.

El-Ladan also said that the center had a standard rehabilitation unit, where patients were trained on how to become self-reliant after treatment.

“The patients, after treatment, undergo different skill acquisition training to become self-reliant.

“We train them on knitting, soap and pomade making, cake, baking and beads making to fend for themselves after discharge.”

El-Ladan said the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) department had assisted many patients with resettlement packages to start businesses after discharged.

He called on Katsina State Government and corporate organizations to support the patients to start new lives after treatment.
