The Cross River chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Thursday advised the state government to recruit at least 200 nurses and 100 midwives, to enhance healthcare services.

Mr John Ushie, the NLC’s Chairman in the state gave the advice in an interview with NAN in Calabar.

Ushie said that the recruitment would help bridge the gap in the sector, which was caused by retirement and resignation of seasoned nurses and midwives.

“The NLC in the state is appealing to the state governor to approve the recruitment of at least 200 nurses and midwives for the state and about 100 nurses for the 18 local government areas.

“NLC also appeal for the grant of in-service training to nurses who opt for post basic studies in special and critical areas where manpower is lacking,” he said.

Ushie said the recruitment would go a long way in improving the quality of healthcare service delivery in the state.

The chairman lauded the state government’s free treatment programme for pregnant women and children under five.

He noted that the programme has made healthcare services very accessible, especially to rural dwellers.
