Atletico Madrid secured a 12th clean sheet in their last 16 Champions League outings as PSV Eindhoven finished with 10 men after Gaston Pereiro’s red card.
The Spanish visitors should have been ahead at the interval, Jeffrey Bruma clearing Luciano Vietto’s early attempt off the line in the Netherlands.
Atletico’s top scorer Antoine Griezmann was denied by a fine save from Jeroen Zoet after springing the offside trap.
PSV went close through Davy Propper before Pereiro’s 68th minute dismissal.
Uruguay-born forward Pereiro, who had already been booked, was ordered off after jumping into countryman Diego Godin.
Atletico Madrid, the 2014 runners-up, will start as favourites to finish off PSV and advance to the quarter-finals when the two teams meet in the second leg at the Vicente Calderon on 15 March.
