Prof. Friday Ndubuisi, Vice Chancellor, Christopher University, Mowe, in Ogun, on Sunday said that the proliferation of private universities in the country did not mean they were sub-standard.
Ndubuisi told the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) in Lagos that any private university that has met the National Universities Commission (NUC) requirements has what it takes to produce qualified graduates.
According to him, most of the vice chancellors in private universities have made their mark in public universities and internationally and will not permit mediocrity.
He said that most of the private universities were under the mentorship of notable public and international universities.
“Compare a graduate from state, Federal and Private University, you will be surprised about your finding.
“Students in private universities are likely to be more confident, better equipped and qualified due to their exposure to a conducive learning environment,’’ Ndubuisi said.
The don said that the government had done a good thing by allowing investors to invest in private universities.
“In the next 15 years, you will be surprised about the effort of the private universities in the sector.
“The private universities would have succeeded in turning out graduates who can compete favourably internationally,’’ he said.
Ndubuisi said that most Nigerian students were faced with harsh conditions but given a conducive environment, they came out best.
“For the past 15 years, Nigerian students have been among the best outside the shores of this country due to the conducive environment in which they study,’’ he said.
The VC, however, pleaded with the government to assist the private universities so that their fees can be reduced due to the important role they play in the education sector.
