Enyimba eye winning start in Champions League campaign

Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Champions League, Enyimba Football Club of Aba have vowed to begin their campaign in this year’s tournament on a winning note.

The Nigerian team take on Vipers SC of Uganda at 4pm local time (2pm Nigerian) inside the Nakivubo stadium on Friday.

Chairman of Enyimba FC, Felix Anyasi-Agwu said the team touched down in Uganda safely in the early hours of Thursday, adding that the spirit in camp was high ahead of Friday’s tie., which is preliminary round first leg fixture.

“I want to assure that we are here to pick the three points at stake. The team are ready. We have a tradition and name to keep on the continent, we will not disappoint Nigeria, ” Anyasi-Agwu said.

The People’s Elephants, as Enyimba are fondly called, will be having their ninth appearances in the CAF Champions League, winning the tournament twice in 2003 and 2004.

Meanwhile, Coach of Enyimba Paul Aigbogun says the team will give a hundred percent performance when they play Ugandan champions Vipers on Friday.

Aigbogun said he and his boys had prepared adequately and will give a good fight come match day.

“One thing I’d say is that we are going to give 100 percent,” he said. “It’s a CAF Champions League game and it’s big, but I believe by God’s grace we would come out with a result that will make everyone happy,” he told the club’s website.

He said he wasn’t under pressure going into his first competitive game with the two-time African champions. “I’m not bothered, I am not under pressure. Given the time scale, we prepared as best as we could for the game. We are focused and we will go out on Friday and give everything we’ve got.

“It may be my first competitive game with the team but it’s not an issue. This is a club very experienced on the continent and a lot of the players here have been in big games, so there’s no issue.”
