Former Delta State governor, James Ibori, was convicted for corruption

Former governor of Delta State, James Onanefe Ibori has completed his prison terms in the United Kingdom. But he is yet to be a free man, as he was immediately re-arrested.

TheNEWS learnt that Ibori jailed 13 years in April 2012 by a Southwark Crown court in London was released by prison authorities on 22 January.

He was released from Her Majesty’s Prison in Bedford, outside of London, where he finished his prison term. He was also initially at the Long Lartin Prison in Worcestershire.

“He is out of here”, a prison source at Bedford confirmed on Tuesday night.

Our sources said Ibori was re-arrested to face another charge, which borders on the confiscation of his ill-gotten assets, estimated to be about 250 million pounds. The case initially billed for May, will now come up in June, sources told us this afternoon.

We cannot however confirm Ibori’s new prison.

Fifty-seven year old Ibori was jailed for using UK financial institutions to launder hundreds of millions of pound sterling he stole from public funds in Delta State.

His journey to jail began with his arrest On 13 May 2010 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates under Interpol arrest warrants, issued from United Kingdom courts and enacted by the Metropolitan Police.

He had earlier made a mockery of Nigeria’s legal system, walking away free from the multi-billion fraud charge levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, including the $15 million bribe he offered the then EFCC chairman, Nuhu Ribadu.

Ibori’s case and extradition became one of the longest, most complex and expensive operations mounted by Scotland Yard in recent years.

Prosecutors alleged that companies owned by Ibori and his family were beneficiaries from the sale of state assets, including shares in Econet, a GSM telephone operator, as well as crude oil deliveries.

Before his conviction, UK juries two years earlier found James Ibori’s sister, Christine Ibie-Ibori and his mistress, Udoamaka Okoronkwo, guilty on counts of money laundering, in a verdict delivered at the Southwark Crown Court, London.

On 27 February 2012, Ibori himself was docked, accused of stealing US$250 million from the Nigerian public purse. He pleaded guilty to ten counts of money laundering and conspiracy to defraud. Among possessions confiscated were a house in Hampstead, north London, for £2.2million, a property in Shaftesbury, Dorset for £311,000, A £3.2m mansion in Sandton, near Johannesburg South Africa , a fleet of armoured Range Rovers valued at £600,000,a £120,000 Bentley Continental GT, A Mercedes-Benz Maybach bought for €407,000 cash, that was shipped direct to his mansion in South Africa

After the sentencing hearing, Sue Patten, head of the Crown Prosecution Service central fraud group, said it would bid to confiscate the assets Ibori had acquired his riches “at the expense of the some of the poorest people in the world.

Also jailed with him apart from his sister and mistress were his wife, Theresa Nkoyo Ibori, his lawyer, Bhadresh Gohil and his financial advisors, Daniel McCann and Lambertus De Boer.

While in prison, Ibori continued to exercise a lot of influence on the politics of his Delta state, with the present governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, regarded as one of his disciples.

Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, two term governor of the state, who succeeded him in 2007 is his uncle.

Born in Oghara, 57 years ago, the young James Onanefe Ibori was educated at Baptist High school, now Oghareki Grammar School. From there, he went to the University of Benin, where he studied economics and statistics. After his university education, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he worked at Wickes DIY, married his wife, Theresa and tainted his record with two convictions for theft and credit card fraud, that were to later haunt his political career in Nigeria.

He became governor of Delta state in 1999 and held forte for eight years.

  1. James Ibori,s fate is what is awaiting the former oil minister of former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan,Mrs Diezani Alison Madueke, who is facing similar bribery and money-laundering charges in Londo,U.K.,s court presently.
Instead of serving their community and country with dedication and humility, they enriched themselves and relatives while holding public offices.
But in other clime, serving in any public position is seen as serving to contribute your quota to the development of your community with sincerity.

James Ibori is an epitome of forgery and frivolous acts couple with the problem of god-fatherism which cover up evil deeds of their boys.
The government of Goodluck Jonathan was a mess to political ideology and in fact, it was the “fertilizer” that enrich Corruption and strengthen fraudulent act of the politicians in his days. Thank God for bringing the present government of Muhammadu Buhari.
And to the thieves, like Ibori, Allison Madueke, Olsa Metuh, Sambo Dasuki and the rest, they should rest in prison.
    Thank you.

  3. Tony Adewale Johnson

Different strokes for different folks. While some are called ruling party leaders despite their massive loot, Ibori is in prison. The junk paper called PM News celebrates it.

  4. chima

he is a product of our system go to ogara and sample opinions of his wanton profligacy and you will be shocked at his level of acceptance even some of the present crop of politicians holding sway in public offices were all beneficiaries of his monumental corruption and so odidikpoikpoi lives in their hearts while they watch the charade unfold

  5. james bond

Leave ibori to suffer what he planted. If ibori was tried in Nigeria,he never be jailed. Not bcos he is innocent but bcos of corruption among the judges and other political leader. Our judges are completely incompetent and lack professionalism.

  6. henry E

lbori ,despite the various names hanged on his head,,is still better than many of the so called governors today.many of the politicians cant do half of what he did in the state today Till date he still remain the best gov Delta state have ever produced,i remain to be challenged!!there are many of them in the country, where are the judges that collected money to free him in niger?are they dead?niger is a rotten country!!

  7. Pity our system so much in self contradiction, especially with our current dispensation so baptized in lies and make-beliefs and wicked propaganda. Some justice are dispensed here on planet Earth while some are being awaited in KARMA judgement Kingdom. Liars and hypocrites are Kings in our fake dispensation.

  8. jimoh

THANK GOD THAT IBORI WAS NOT TRIE
D IN NIGERIA IF NOT HE WOULD HAVE BEEN JAILED AND GIVE OPTION OF FINE OF 750K AFTER STEALING BILLIONS OF DOLAS , ALL BECAUSE OF CORRUP JUDGES WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY

  9. ALNET

Shameless and Destructive. A former governor now a former prisoner; what a life? The devil still brags about that “Delta State belongs to him”. Whether out of Jail or not, his life is worthless and he’ll have complex health issues to deal with like Diezani. A failed father, a thief, a betrayal of good-will. Posterity will forever judge Ibori and his house hold. His children down to 30 generations from now will suffer calamity upon calamity. Only the fools who’re ready to kill their off-springs to amass immediate wealth will celebrate a thief like Ibori. Deltans suffer today bcos of the evil from one man; Ibori created a system wherein only the worse set of persons emerge victorious in elections. DELTANS are wiser now; next four year will be face to face with reality. There’ll be no room for rigging. THESE ARE THE DAYS OF JUDGEMENT FOR IBORI & HIS CO-EVIL MEN

  10. solexy

the worst corrupt arm of government is the judiciary, our judges r very corrupt and r disappointment to dis nation.

  11. chibuzor

I am not saying. Ibori is good , but if it is possible I think Emmanuel Uduaghan should take the place of Ibori in prison coz Delta state is still the way ibori left it.

  12. Omo Oba

    Serves him right

  13. Hon. Excellence Ekiruo

Well, one may say that James ibori is fraudulent and celebrate his reproach but there are obviously different views to his predicament. Yes maybe Ibori truly stole public funds from delta state where he served a Governor, but truth remains that this so call UK thief is not regarded as such back home in Delta state. It’s important therefore, to ask why this same man highly celebrated among his own deltas and in fact jailing chief Ibori was a felony against the people of Delta state where he served as a Governor.
This is obvious holding to the fact that Ibori credentials in Delta state where he served as Governor, is the best ever observed by the people within and outside Delta state. It’s important to note few, Ibori Administration opened up delta state beyond expectation, construction of roads was massive. Distribution of wealth was indiscriminately spread among all class without regard to age and status. Education, Health care, employment had almost 100% attention. In fact nothing was left unattended to.
So i don’t agree that the money in question is delta state funds.

  14. Godwin Arong

it is because of their spacemoniousness heartlessness., i thank God all their good deeds are living within and after them

  15. Eziokwu Bundu

This publication is nothing but big lie and deceit there is no single truth there about ibori being released. First of all ibori has not yet finished his six and half years serving tariff which should be in December this year (from 2010) and ibori has never been to Bedford prison as matter of fact ibori is currently serving in Hmp Huntercombe and has been there since 2014. So stop this your cut and paste stories that you are using to mislead and misinform naive innocent Nigerians.

  16. Joachim

Please allow ibori to answer for all his crimes and serve more prison terms and also let uduaghan be arrested and tried because he committed similar offences to that of ibori. In Delta state, uduaghan did not do better than ibori’s government did.

  17. Eternal

Well, every man is entitle to his opinion. Those who are pointing accusing finger are even worst if given opportunity. Diezani must have as well condemn Ibori before she eventually got into her own mess. Now she does not even have the moral right to say any thing because her own hand have sore.
Though corrupt they called him, his administration still remain the best since he left office. He still the greatest loyalist not because of the corruption but because of his performance.
If the government of Nigeria cannot bring other corrupt Nigerians to book, they should leave Ibori alone.

The UK government should not feel too smart in other country citizen. They should be concern with their own affair. There are many Nigerians which the UK government is benefiting from economically, because that, they will not probe such people. UK government is feeling proud of being used by some few Nigerians to witch hut a single man. That is not fair.

To Ibori I do not give praise to you but just feeling too pity for all you have pass through. I know you have learnt your lesson and you have recognise your enemy.

If given a chance again I will still vote him.

  18. He still remain the best despite his deeds…U know the funniest tin abt him is dat many deltans are wishing if they could ever have someone like him for a governor again…Bcux he was a man wit a big heart…those happy over is suffering shuld be ready for theirs if not here on earth it will be in heaven…remember rejoice not wen thy enemy falls

  19. Kallah

Most nigerians are corrupted, why?one would be entrusted with anything at would want to spend more than earnings, corruption starts from one to infinity,so whoever taken-off one is the same with one who has taken-off billions,so watch out,To Ibori and every body,a previlege to serve is not a previlege to loot but fear God in everything

  20. Henry

Hmmm. who In Nigeria Government that is not corrupt, at list the very man (James Ibori ) has been tortured too much let go of him, at list he with other citizens of Nigeria have learn from his mistake. Nd if corruption is do for eradication, let Nigeria Government fight it from the beginning to the down. because there re many past Govt, even the present one that re more Dengerous than Mr Ibori. look at Nigeria a very big Country, so Blessed with many things, by God, what do we suppose to be lacking, if not selfish corrupted leaders that have been ruling us. look Nigeria a place where youth doesn’t have hope even after High Education. where poor masses is not taking care of, all they do is using them in time election nd dump them. After everything we the masses will hearing names of money been looted by our so call leaders, Nigeria my country, my question is where re we going, when will all this be over nd become a history to our younger generation to come.

  22. Ibori left Bedford two years ago.
The confiscation is not a new charge.
It was his jailed lawyer Gohil, who was re-arrested 6 weeks ago after completing his jail term .
But he went to court & the outcome amongst other things revealed that the MET is corrupt & indeed the prosecution has signalled its intention not to continue with the case.
Ibori is still where he is until June 2016 when the confiscation trial begins.

My concern is the fact that legitimate media owe the public the right to know the truth. Even, when the MET is currently battling with credibilty the BBC has done much bring the issue to the public.

  23. Obasanjo . Babangida and all Abacha family nd lawyers should all rout in jail.if president Buhari thinks he is fighting corruption including jonathan

  24. Kenneth Enoch

What Janes Ibori is suffering today is not torture. It is a reward and we pray that every harvests what they planted. When they were in power, they never thought days like these will ever come.

  25. Gabriel Okafor

Nigeria as a country, have been caught up in a deep “web of deceit” and it’s only God Almighty that can deliver her from it.

  26. Ben10

We must begin as one people to start calling spade a spade,

  27. Well, james ibori is a critical fraudster but he also tried in delta state.in his tennor, he tried,he gives road, employment to unemployment, good health care centre, ellectricity, etc,i think it’s time to release the so called former Governor of delta state, cuz he has suffer enuff there in the prison,he carried his cross by himself, please Nigerians and our president should try to take james ibori issue serious to make sure he comes out from that prison,by the way Nigerians, can you imagine the stupid former Governor of delta state, emmanue oduaghan he rule for 4 years with any improvement in delta state, his the most money laundery in Nigeria

  28. if ibori is a thief, the governor who ruled delta state after him for eight years is an armed robber. Ibori remains one of the most adored and celebrated politicians in Delta, his final home coming from incarceration will prove me right deltans are waiting to see their leader.
