Boroffice pledges senate support for Buhari on STI

‎The Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice has assured Nigerians that the Nigerian Senate will give legislative support to the renewed commitment of the Federal Government towards adopting Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) as a tool for industrial advancement and economic development of Nigeria.

In a press statement signed by his Media Assistant, Kayode Adeniyi, the senator representing Ondo North, said appropriate investment in STI will considerably raise the bar of Nigeria’s income per capita, provide millions of gainful jobs and drive millions of Nigerians from poverty to prosperity.

“Utterly satisfactory and commendable is the renewed commitment of the Federal Government to inject appropriate investment into Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) as announced by President Muhammadu Buhari at the inaugural meeting with the National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC) in Abuja recently.

“Apparently, President Buhari’s position is an unambiguous manifestation of his understanding and acknowledgement that no nation has ever recorded breakthrough in industrialisation without factoring STI to its national strategy for economic growth and development.

“Therefore, it is imperative to mainstream STI in our national economic policy. The experience of industrialised nations has shown positive correlation between investment in STI and income per capita.‎ Countries like Japan, China, South Korea and even South Africa are apt examples. With appropriate investment in STI; income per capita will considerably increase, there will be creation of millions of gainful jobs and opportunities, and movement of millions of Nigerians from poverty to prosperity is guaranteed.

“As Chairman, the Senate Committee on Science and Technology through its oversight functions will give President Buhari full support to ensure that resource allocation to STI is properly utilized to justify the new paradigm shift in government perception of Science and Techology.

“Finally, I am confident that under the guardian and leadership of Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, the Ministry of Science and Technology and its parastatals will take President Buhari’s position on STI as a challenge”, the statement read.
