Mom, daughter remanded over alleged theft

The police at the Onikan Division, Ikoyi, Lagos, western Nigeria, have arrested a ten-year-old girl (name withheld) for allegedly stealing the sum of N350,000 belonging to her employer, Raliat Opuoro and handing it over to her mother, Tope Hassan, 27.

The incident, according to the police, took place at 21, Ajeniya Street, Obalende, Lagos.

Police alleged that the girl was taken to the complainant as house help by her mother before she allegedly stole the money while her boss was asleep.

During investigation, according to the police, the girl allegedly confessed to the alleged crime, that she stole the money from her madam and handed it over to her mother.

In her alleged confession, the girl allegedly said: “my mother took me to the complainant to assist her because she was suffering from eye sight related problems with the instructions by my mother that anytime I come I across my madam’s money I should steal it and bring it to her.

“And when my madam dropped a bag containing money in her room I stole it and handed it over to my mother. I did not know how to steal before, but my mother tutored me to commit the crime and I promise not to steal again.”

Following her alleged confession, she led the police to arrest her mother who, during interrogation, allegedly denied receiving any money from her daughter.

The girl and her mother were arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on a two-count charge of stealing and receiving the sum of N305,500 from her daughter knowing same to have been stolen.

The offences, the prosecutor Inspector Asu Feddy said, are punishable under sections 285 and 326 of the criminal laws of Lagos State, 2011.

While the girl pleaded guilty to the alleged crime, her mother pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate Mrs. O.A. Ogunbowale admitted the mother to bail in the sum of N10,000 with two surties in like sum, while she ordered that the girl be remanded at the Children’s Correctional Centre, Idi-Araba, Surulere, Lagos till the adjourned date.

The mother was taken to Kirikiri Prison, Apapa, Lagos pending when she will fulfill her bail conditions.
