2 traders land in prison for removing another trader’s teeth

Two housewives who are traders at Daddy Alaja market, Oke Arin, Lagos Island, western Nigeria, have been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrates’ Court for allegedly removing the three teeth of a another trader in the market by hitting her with a stone during a fight.

The fight ensued when the victim, Oluwaseyi Ololuwa, challenged the two women for allegedly urinating inside the market.

The accused persons, Amina Adegun, 31, a resident of 1, Daddy Alaja Street, Oke Arin market,who claimed to be agraduate of Accountancy from the University of Lagos, and Rukkayat Adebola Ladejobi, 36, who resides at 2B, Bank Olemo Street, Surulere, who claimed to be a graduate from Yaba College of Technology, were arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge of felony to wit: assault occasioning permanent injury.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Ignatius Okeke, informed the court that trouble broke out between the accused persons and the complainant, Oluwaseyi Ololuwa, when she challenged the accused persons for urinating inside the market near where they displayed their wares.

He said the accused persons instead descended on the complainant and in the process the accused persons picked up a big stone and hit the complainant on her mouth and her three teeth fell off.

Okeke said the complainant collapsed and was rushed to a hospital where doctors later revived her.

He noted that the offences are punishable under sections 409 and 244 of criminal laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the crime and the Magistrate, Mr. L. Owolabi admitted them to bail in the sum of N100,000 each with two sureties in like sum.

Owolabi adjourned the case till 2 November, 2015 for mention while the defendants, who are married with two and three children each, were taken to Kirikiri Prison, Apapa, Lagos, pending when they will fulfill their bail conditions.
