South-eastern Nigerians resident in South Africa have taken advantage of the bi-national cooperation between the two countries to begin cultural exchanges with major ethnic groups in that country.

One of their leaders, Chief Martin Emechebe, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Midrand, South Africa on Monday that the leaders had already met the king of a major tribe in Limpopo Province to discuss the exchange.

“As part of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-national Commission, South East leaders in South Africa have started reaching out to some tribes here for cultural exchange.

“We are now taking it down to the grassroots. We are beginning to sign memoranda of understanding on cultural exchange.

“The aim is for South Africans to come to Nigeria to see our culture and share from it while Nigerians will also learn from theirs,’’ Emechebe said.

He said the leaders had established a cultural segment in the nine provinces of South Africa to promote Igbo culture.

He said that major Igbo cultural days were now commemorated in South African provinces as a way of promoting the culture of the people of the South East.

Emechebe also said that Nigeria was blessed with a rich culture and that South East leaders had led the way in promoting Igbo culture in South Africa
