The President of Nigeria Kung-fu Federation (NKF), Adedapo Aderemi, on Thursday in Abuja announced that Oyo State had been granted the right to host the National open Kung-fu Championship.
The event would run from Oct. 25 to Oct. 30 in Ibadan, the Oyo capital.
Aderemi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the event would be the first of its kind in the state.
“With this event, the first of the programmes lined up for the year, the new board is set to raise awareness of kung-fu in Nigeria.
“We chose Abuja initially at the last board meeting; now the event will take place at Lead City University in Ibadan from Oct. 25 to Oct. 30.
“The first three days will be for arrival and the training of coaches. The competition proper will then run from Wednesday to Friday; the last day is the closing ceremonies and then Saturday will be for departures.
“We are working hard to ensure that we revive the sport. We are expecting 80 fighters from across the country,” he said.
The president said the federation would select the best fighters from the championship to represent the country at the 2015 World Kung-fu Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia from Nov. 11 to Nov. 19.
“We have practitioners that will represent us at the World Kung-fu Championships. I am sure they will make us proud,’’ he said.
Aderemi said that the federation will be seeking the support of states and corporate organisations to sponsor the championship.
“We have consulted some governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and philanthropists for their support,’’ he said.
