The Labour Party (LP) on Monday extolled the factional leader of the Odu’a Peoples’ Congress (OPC), Dr Fredrick Fasehun, as the activist turns 80.

Fasehun, who is also the National Chairman of the resuscitated Unity Party of Nigeria, was born on Sept. 21, 1935.

In a congratulatory letter signed by the National Secretary of LP, Mr Kayode Ajulo, the party described Fasehun as a patriot, who had contributed immensely to Nigeria’s democratic growth.

“Fasehun was first and foremost an activist albeit a selfless one, who left his calling as a medical doctor to suffer just to ensure that democracy was entrenched in Nigeria.

“Fasehun was one of the movers of the then National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), who fought for military government to stop in Nigeria and paid dearly by being imprisoned.

“He not only fought for justice and what he believes is the truth, he was and still remains a defender of the Yoruba race and the down-trodden.

“We salute the patriot today because at the age of 80, he has not given up the struggle to make Nigeria a better place.”

The party, however, called for national recognition of Fasehun for his selfless services and philanthropy.

“We wish to say that our heroes should be honoured while they are alive hence our call for Nigeria to honour Dr Fasehun while he is still alive.

Fasehun, a medical practitioner, founded the OPC, a Yoruba socio-cultural organisation in 1994 in the wake of the nullification of the June 12, 1993 election.

The election acclaimed to be free and fair was won by business tycoon Chief M.K.O. Abiola and later annulled by the military administration of by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.
