Governor Idris Wada of Kogi on Saturday pledged immediate release of funds for the accreditation of eight courses at the Kogi State University, Ayangba.
Wada, who made the pledge at Ayingba, during the convocation of the university, said that the university should ensure full accreditation of the courses from their current interim status.
The governor’s pledge followed the disclosure by the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Hassan Isah, that eight out of the 32 courses being offered at the institution were yet to gain full accreditation.
The Visitor, however, said that he had kept his promise to assist the university to sustain quality of teaching and learning and ensure conducive atmosphere by increasing its monthly allocation by over N30 million.
The governor said additional two blocks of hostel have also been provided for the school, while additional supports were in the pipeline for the institution.
He promised that government will continue to meet its obligations to the university in spite of the shortfall in the allocation from the federation accounts.
Wada lauded the ongoing Vice-Chancellor for his quality leadership and service, which he said had reflected in the astronomical growth recorded by the university since he assumed office in 2008.
The governor congratulated the new 6,892 graduates and urged them to be good ambassadors of the university.
Wada urged the graduating students to come back and contribute to the development of the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hassan Isah, admonished the graduates to make the best use of training given to them by contributing their quotas to the development of the country.
He thanked the governor for the opportunity given him to serve as the Vice-Chancellor and thanked the staff and students for their support and cooperation.
The Obi of Onitsha, who is also the Chancellor of the university, Dr Nnameka Achebe, lauded the achievements of the institution in the academic and infrastructural development, saying there are rooms for improvement.
He identified funding as the major challenge facing the school and appealed to the private sector to complement government’s efforts by partnering with the authorities to address some of the challenges.
The Obi urged the new graduates to prove themselves creditably in the larger society and to reflect on the good training that had received from the institution.
