Constable, fishermen remanded for kidnap

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday remanded a 41-year-old policeman and three fishermen in prison for allegedly kidnapping nine police officers.

Police constable Akowe Jacob and the fishermen, Godwin German, 36, Tamarami Tunwa, 23; and Mayibi Hazeez, 29, are facing a 10-count charge bordering on conspiracy and kidnapping.

The Prosecutor, DSP Raymond Odion, told the court that on May,24,2014 at about 9am, the accused kidnapped ASP Abdullahi Bature, Insp. Raymond Oriere, Insp. Usman Mohammed and Insp. Oguntimehin Kolawale.

Odion listed other officers kidnapped as Insp. Tijani Jimoh.Cpl. Elogbamen, Cpl. Yakubu Alitu, Cpl Usman Abdulkareem and Cpl. Dauda Mohammed all of whom were on their lawful duties at Arepo when the incident occurred

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences.

NAN reports that Section 33 (1a) of Terrorism Act provides 20 years imprison for any person found guilty of the offence.

Odion, however, urged the court to remand the accused in prison, pending trial.

Barr. SW Baide, Counsel to the accused, urged the court to grant them bail, promising the court that they would not jump bail.

Baide supported his bail application with a 19-paragraph-affidavit and a written address.

Justice Mohammed Yunusa has fixed Sept. 15, for ruling on the bail application.
