A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo state, Captain Samson Amineshi (rtd), has been reportedly killed by unidentified gunmen.

Amineshi who was shot dead on Thursday along the Igarra-Okpe road, was said to have attended a social function in Igarra and was driving back home to Okpe in his car with two other occupants ‎when they were said to have been flagged down by the gunmen, but was said to dodged them and sped off, unknown to him that others also laid ambush just metres away.

The deceased was said to have instructed other occupants of the car to dock, when the second group of assailants suddenly appeared and fired directly at him, killing him on the spot.

It was further gathered that the assailants forcefully collected unknown amount of money from the occupants and later sped off on a motorcycle.

Some persons in the community are of the opinion that Amineshi’s death was a political assassination because the former councillor is believed to be preparing for the council election in the state.

Family sources said the matter has been reported at the Igarra police station, but the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Stephen Onwochei, could not be reached yesterday for confirmation.
