The Delta male and female Chess teams emerged winners of the maiden South-South National Sports Commission (NSC) Chess Competition which ended on Saturday in Benin.

In the male category, Team Delta clinched the first position with 10 points; Edo came second with seven points, while Rivers had no point.

In the female category, Team Delta also came first with 12 points, Edo came second with 6 points while Rivers had no point.

Peter Agbonkhese, who doubles as the National and Edo Chess Coach, commended the organisers and the level of play of the contestants.

Agbonkhese also praised the Delta teams for their level of play but noted that Edo team B and C players were used for the competition.

He said the competition had gone a long way to prepare the players for the national sports festival.

Paul Boyo, a Chief Arbiter, who arbitrated during the competition, urged the players to continue to work hard and improve on their tactics.

He also called on other states in the zone that did participate in the competition to avail themselves of opportunities at subsequent tournaments.

NAN reports that the competition which ran from Aug. 20 to Aug. 22 was jointly organised by the Nigerian Chess Federation, NSC South-South zone and the Edo Sports Commission
