The Buhari Magic Wand

Everywhere one turns these days, there are indications that the nation is on the path of economic and social rebirth. It is palpable. It could be felt even by the blind. Only those who have chosen not to notice this could say something contrary. Since President Muhammadu Buhari took over power on 29 May, it has not been business as usual for those who have been pillaging the nation’s resources with reckless abandon over the years. Most of them who are still in service are being shown the way out, while those who have already left the corridors of power are going to account for their misdeeds and the government is determined to retrieve their loot.

This pleasant development shouldn’t come as a surprise to many because Buhari had announced during his electioneering campaign that he would fight corruption to a standstill. Those who said he was too slow initially are beginning to have a second thought, considering the modest success he has so far recorded even without his cabinet yet in place. The systemic rot is so pervasive that it would take some time to cleanse everything.

Only those who have cause to fear are crying wolf. They are the symbols of corruption fighting back. Someone like Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State who has been crying himself hoarse over the actions so far taken by President Buhari should better be mindful of his utterances so that he doesn’t end up on the wrong side of history. As a governor, he should conduct himself with decorum. So far, Nigerians are happy with the steps Buhari’s government is taking.

Buhari’s body language alone is doing wonders. Little did Nigerians know that in such a short time, electricity supply would be so regular to the extent that things get frozen in the refrigerators that had become almost useless due to lack of electricity before Buhari came to power. It is interesting to hear that power supply would hit the 5,000mw mark by December this year.

Everything seems to be lining up magically as if being remote-controlled from somewhere. The refineries that had been abandoned for long are being revived. By the time they refine crude optimally for local consumption, it would go a long way in ending the monumental fraud associated with importation of refined petroleum products.

Most dormant agencies of government have equally bounced back to life. Suddenly, anti-graft agencies are going after criminals who looted the treasury. EFCC and ICPC can now bark and bite. These are interesting times and we hope President Buhari would not be distracted so that he could sustain the momentum of positive change until the lost glory of our country is restored fully. He deserves the support of all Nigerians irrespective of their tribal or religious leanings.
