A 23-year old man, Leke Adebowale, who has spent the last four years in and out of the Nigerian prison at Kirikiri, Lagos State, western Nigeria, has declared that he was not a big time criminal because he finds it difficult to carry arms to rob.

Adebowale made the declaration at the Magistratess’ court, Ejigbo, Lagos, where he was facing criminal trial and was convicted for the fourth time for stealing.

He confessed that he was a serial prisoner who had gone to prison on four different occasions in four years.

Despite that, he insisted that he was not a big time robber because he had no courage to take up arms to rob people.
He said his major problem was he had no stable job and that has made him to take what does not belong to him.

Adebowal was convicted and jailed on Monday after he pleaded guilty for theft by Magistrate J.O.E. Adeyemi of Ejigbo Magistrates’ court.

Adebowale was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri early this year where he was brought to court for fact and sentence after he pleaded guilty.

The arrest of Adebowale followed a report to the police at Ijegun division of the theft of an unregistered motorcycle.
The prosecutor, Seagent Babaji Ishaku informed the court that Adebowale stole the motocycle and escaped sometime this year and since then, the police have been looking for him.

Ishaku said he was later arrested after several months and charged to court for stealing and he pleaded guilty.
Ishaku urged the court to sentence him accordingly to serve as deterant to those who might commit similar offence.
However, Barrister Mariam Njoku from the Legal Aids Counsel of Nigeria pleaded on his behalf and asked the court to temper justice with mercy.

The court, which was unaware of his prison history, found him guilty as charged and sentenced him to 21 Days imprisonment with four hours labour at the court premises.
