A total of N25,700 candidates are jostling for 6,500 slots in the 2015 post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) screening of the University of Jos, Mr Jilli Damdam, the UniJos Registrar, has said.

Damdam told NAN on Tuesday in Jos that the figure represented only those who scored 180 points and above in the UTME and chose University of Jos as their first choice.

He said that the number of candidates who had applied for admission into the university was much higher but that only those who met this year’s Joint Admission’s Matriculation Board (JAMB) cut-off point were invited.

The registrar explained that the school would have admitted only 4,500 but for recent increase in the carrying capacity of the university by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

“We had nine faculties and three new ones were approved for the school. Therefore, the NUC increased our carrying capacity from 4,500 to 6,500.”

He said that the registration for the post-UTME started on August 10 and would end on August 27.

“The actual test (exams) will take place from August 28 to September 5, 2015.

“Candidates are advised to visit the school website to register after payment of N2,000 only to designated banks as contained on the website.

“When you complete the registration online, the date and time you will write yours will immediately display and you are expected to print the slip and come along with your original JAMB slip to the venue of the exams on that day,” he explained.

According to him, the exam was staggered from August 28 to September 5 because it is a computer-based test and to avoid too many persons on the campus.

Damdam said that the candidates were grouped into three — science, social science and arts.

The registrar gave assurance that adequate security measures had been put in place in collaboration with the Special Task Force (STF), the Police and the Civil Defence Corps, to protect the candidates and the examiners.

He said that only candidates who had their JAMB slips and the university’s acceptance slip would be allowed into the premises.

He stressed that security personnel would not allow people milling around when it is not their time and therefore, advised candidates to report only on the specified dates.

The registrar said that candidates were expected to 30 minutes ahead of time, adding that the last day (Aug. 5) was meant for those who missed their assigned dates.
