An Ijaw leader, Regent Youmor, on Monday said the appointment of retired Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh would facilitate the payment of fees of ex-militants schooling abroad.
Youmor, the adviser of the Ijaw National Congress, Lagos chapter, said this in an interview with NAN in Lagos.
President Muhammadu Buhari, on July 28, appointed Boroh as the coordinator of the amnesty programme to replace Mr Kingsley Kuku, the former Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Youmor said that over 3,000 beneficiaries of the programme had been ejected from their various institutions abroad due to non-payment of the fees.
He said that the beneficiaries were sent back home from their various schools in Italy, Germany and US.
According to him, the appointment of Boroh has brought hope to the ex-militants as it will ensure quick return of those students to their schools.
“In fact, by next week, the students will be going back to their schools; and the issue of non-payment of amnesty programme staff that were not paid, he is addressing that also,” he said.
The Ijaw leader said that the appointment of Boroh had brought calm to the restive youth in the Niger-Delta. “This is one appointment that Ijaw people are very happy about; a replacement of the former presidential adviser with another patriot,” he said.
Youmor urged the beneficiaries of the amnesty programme to continue to ensure peace in the area. “My advice to beneficiaries of amnesty programme is that they should maintain peace.
“We are in a democratic dispensation; we have rules governing our behaviour, so, I enjoin you to maintain law and order to have a smooth sustenance of the amnesty programme.
“This is because if you disrupt peace of the area, the programme will be scuttled.
“So, your peaceful conduct, obedience and loyalty to the government will guarantee continuity of the amnesty programme,” Youmor said.
