Winners Of Okonkwo Essay Competition Emerge

Master Chisom Emeto of Port-Harcourt International School, Rivers State has emerged as the overall winner of this year’s Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Secondary School Students in the country. It’s the 12th edition.

Out of 2,997 entries received for the competition, Emeto was adjudged as the best candidate by the chief examiner, Professor Akachi Ezeigbo of the English Department, University of Lagos. ”For his ability to engage the subject by showing how citizens have been culprits in entrenching bad governance and then proposing what must be done to institute a political class that will deliver good governance, Master Emeto came out tops among the candidates,” Ezeigbo stated.

According to Ezeigbo, Emeto scored 73 percent in the first round of the competition and 66 percent in the second round to emerge the winner of the competition this year.

Asuquo Mirabel of Redeemers International Secondary School, East-West Road, Nkpolu, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State came second with 72 percent in the first round and 65 percent in the second round while Ihejirika Jonathan Ikechukwu of Kings College, Lagos scored 71 percent in the first round and 60 percent in the second round of the competition to emerge third.

Page001The fourth position went to Awe Iyanuoluwa Modupe of Chapel Secondary School, Ilorin, Kwara State. Awe scored 65 percent in the first round and 56 percent in the second round.

Aladegbami Oluwadamilola of Hallmark Secondary School, Ondo State, came fifth with 66 percent scored in the first round and 55 percent in the second round while Muhammed Babayo of Premier Academy, Lugbe, Abuja scored 65 percent in the first stage and 51 percent in the second stage to come sixth. The seventh position went to Iro Akanma of Kuramo Senior Secondary School, Victoria Island, Lagos. Iro scored 60 percent in the first round and 50 percent in the second round.

For coming top in this year’s competition, Emeto will receive a cheque of N100,000, a laptop and a plaque, while his school will receive three internet-ready computers and a printer. Mirabel who came second will go home with a cheque of N75,000, a plaque and the school will get two internet ready computers and a printer. For emerging third, Ihejirika of Kings College, Lagos, will go home with a cheque of N50,000, a plaque and his school will receive an internet ready computer. The fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh winners will get a consolation prize of N20,000 each.

The prizes for the winners will be presented at this year’s Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture at the Shell Hall, Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos on Thursday, September 3. The theme for this year’s lecture is: “The Nigerian Political Class and the Citizens Quest for Good Governance.”

Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Secondary School Students was initiated in 2004 as part of activities to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Mike Okonkwo (MFR), the presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, TREM. The competition was instituted to contribute to the development of the education sector.
