The Kaduna State Government has warned residents against stealing refuse bins provided for the collection refuse in the state.

Mr Salihu Ahmed, Director of Environment in the state Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, gave the warning in an interview with NAN in Kaduna on Friday.

Ahmed alleged that residents had been “stealing the refuse bins” provided at market places, streets and major junctions, especially in Kaduna metropolis.

Ahmed, who was reacting to complaints by some residents of Sabo Tasha and Barnawa on the non- provision refuse bins in the areas, said government was doing its best to meet its obligation.

He further alleged that four large refuse bins placed at strategic locations around Sabon Tasha market were stolen by miscreants.

“Its surprising that after a while four refuse bins located at Sabon Tasha market suddenly disappeared.

“The bins were provided to address indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages to avoid flooding. How could people steal them?

“This display of unpatriotic attitude undermines governments effort at keeping the metropolis clean,” the director said.

Ahmed said henceforth direct shop owners in areas where the theft of bins was rampant would “pay for subsequent refuse evacuation”.

He said the reason why there was always heap of refuse by the road side in Barnawa was because there no refuse disposal sites in the area.

“Our officials evacuate the refuse every morning but by evening it piles up again.

“We spoke with the elders of the area to create space for the site, but we have not heard from them,” he said.

The director appealed to the residents to exercise patience, assuring that the ministry was making efforts to address the problem.
