Fabio Capello’s contract as the coach of Russia has been terminated, three years before the country hosts the 2018 World Cup. The Russian Football Union (RFU) has confirmed the Italian’s departure but is yet to name his successor.

A statement on RFU website read: “The Russian Football Union and the head coach of Russia’s national team, Fabio Capello, have reached an agreement to terminate the employment contract by mutual agreement.”

CSKA Moscow coach Leonid Slutski is widely tipped to takeover the reins as Russia looks to fight back in its bid to qualify for Euro 2016.

The RFU had indicated it would have talks in June about ending Capello’s contract worth a reported £6.8m a year following Russia’s defeat in a Euro 2016 qualifier by Austria.
