Police arrest 3 kidnapping suspects

The Police in Benue have arrested three suspected kidnappers in Makurdi, the Police Public Relations Officer, Austin Ezeani, has said.

Ezeani, who made the disclosure to NAN in Makurdi on Tuesday, also said that two other suspects, including an army corporal, ran away.

He said the suspects were arrested on Monday when they attempted to kidnap one Susan Audu, adding that a revolver and eight rounds of ammunition were found on them.

Ezeani said Audu, who lived beside Modern Market, Makurdi, was coming out of her residence in her Toyota Siena bus when the gang of five dispossessed her of the vehicle.

He said the victim was forcibly bundled into the vehicle and driven away along Gboko Road.

He said the gang was out of luck when motorcycle operators heard loud screams from the fleeing vehicle and mobilised to pursue it and caught up with it at a military checkpoint on the outskirts of Makurdi.

The police spokesman said the three had been detained by the police, while a search was on to arrest the remaining.

He said the army suspect, was a lance corporal with the Nigerian Army, adding that the police had contacted the Army to ensure his arrest.

Ezeani said the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations into the matter were concluded.
