Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Monday assured members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) of reward if they work hard and diligently during their stay in the state.
“Lagos State has a tradition of rewarding excellence in the course of your service; I urge you to be diligent, selfless and hardworking, so that you will be rewarded at the end of the service year,” he said at the closing ceremony of the orientation for 2015 NYSC Batch ‘A’ Stream II members, at the orientation camp in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos.
The governor, represented by Dr Titilayo Dosunmu, the Director, Finance and Administration, Ministry of Special Duties, said that the plan for the befitting camp was underway.
“The Lagos State Government will leave no stone unturned in working hard to ensure that the proper platform for youth development is put in place and properly utilised.
“I appreciate the management of the scheme and collaborating agencies for ensuring a hitch-free orientation exercise in spite of the limitation in the camp facilities.
“We shall continue to improve on the camp facilities in the readiness for other batches of corps members,” he said.
Ambode said that the new administration had confidence in the ability of the youths to perform excellently in the implementation of development programmes.
“You are expected to contribute and excel in the developmental programmes of the state, especially in the areas of providing manpower for qualitative free education, free medical service and environmental sanitation.
“We shall not spare any effort in ensuring that your proven expertise and creative energies are fully harnessed towards making Lagos the best city of our time.
The governor urged all employers of labour, host communities and residents of the state to warmly receive the corps members and make their welfare a top priority.
Earlier, Mr Cyril Akhanemhe, Lagos State NYSC Coordinator, had reiterated the need for a permanent orientation camp.
He anchored his request on the fact that the youths’ hostel was quite inadequate, given the large number of corps members deployed in the state.
“For posterity sake, all necessary efforts should be made to make this dream a reality in this state,” he said.
Akhanemhe said that members of the 2015 Batch ‘A’ Stream II had passed through activities including para-military drills, leadership and citizenship training by Man ‘O’ War as well as traditional and language lectures by traditional rulers.
“The essence of the training is to prepare these youths for challenges, for a life of independence and self-sustainability thereafter.
“Lectures were also organised in conjunction with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Federal Road Safety Corps on sensitisation programmes for development efforts,” he said.
NAN reports that 2,500 corps members, comprising 825 male and 1,675 female, participated in the orientation exercise.
