Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is putting in place pragmatic solution to decongest traffic in the Lagos metropolis.

The governor toured major traffic black spots in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Thursday to see things for himself and vowed to ensure free-flow traffic in the metropolis.

The Lagos State Governor lamented the perennial vehicular traffic gridlock in the state, noting that, he has directed the relocation of some bus terminals in congested areas to reduce gridlock in the areas.

Fielding questions from journalists after the tour, Ambode said he was greatly concerned about the traffic gridlock being experienced in the state.

“It’s not enough for us stay in the office and believe that we can create solutions to the traffic challenge that we have in the state. So, we decided that we are going to go round ourselves and see how we can improve on the traffic situation in Lagos.

“We have seen that we have been to 3rd Mainland, Oworonshoki, Ketu, Abule-egba, Alimosho and then we have gone to Mile 12. That’s not the end of the story. We’re still going to Apapa, Mile 2. The truth is that we must start to have solutions to our traffic challenges in the state and that’s what we are doing,” he said.

According to Ambode, residents would start noticing solutions to the traffic challenges being experienced in the state.

The governor approved the construction of a pedestrian bridge at Berger area of the state to give room for easy crossing of residents in the ever busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Ambode stated that government had seen that Berger needed a foot bridge and that the engineers were going to work “and we make sure that we put something there. We don’t want any traffic on that highway, so we are already thinking of additional solutions to allow vehicles to extend outside of the highway.

“That is an engineering work and it’s already been considered. In addition to the footbridge, we would do that and we would also make that road be free at all times, because whatever happens there, there is a fall back on the 3rd Mainland and we do not want it, that’s why we went to the Oworonshoki end of the 3rd Mainland.”

Permanent Secretary, Ministry Of Transportation, Oluseyi Coker said he had directed that there should not be bus stops near markets.
