The havoc wreaked by fire in Lagos State, western Nigeria, worsened after fire razed 30 shops in a market in Ajah area of the state on Sunday.
Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Razak Fadipe told P.M.NEWS on Sunday that the timely intervention of the fire service men prevented the entire market from being consumed by the inferno.
He disclosed that the Onikan Fire Service Station responded to the distress call by despatching10,000 litres of water to the scene, while the Lekki Phase 2 Fire Station deployed water and chemical to put out the fire.
On rampant tanker accidents in Lagos, Fadipe disclosed that from 1 January, 2015 to date the fire service responded to 43 tankers and articulated vehicles involved in either spilling fuel or outbreak of fire.
“Drivers of these tankers should know that they are conveying combustible commodity and should be very careful. Tanker drivers that will drive at night should sleep in the day so that they can drive at night. They should engage the service of good mechanics to repair their vehicles so that there will not be faulty. They should be able to read and understand traffic signs,” he stated.
