Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Monday set up a committee to examine the immediate and remote causes of the recent tanker fire incidents in the state.
Ambode made the disclosure during a meeting with representatives of the Petroleum Products Tanker Drivers’ Union and other stakeholders at the Lagos House, Alausa.
He said that the committee, to be chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello would prepare guidelines on ethical conduct for tanker and other heavy duty truck drivers.
According to Ambode, the committee will have as members Permanent Secretaries of Ministries of Transport, Special Duties, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) and the State Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Others are the representatives of Association of Maritime Truck Owners, National Association of Road Transport Owners, National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Lagos State Transport Management Authority, among others.
“In addition, they would quickly engage the insurance industry and relevant stakeholders to meet and work out appropriate insurance policy to protect Lagosians from havoc that may occur in future tanker incidents,” Ambode said.
The governor also said that it was in the interest of the people for the state government to extend the enforcement of traffic laws to all drivers in the state.
“It is not only tanker drivers that are offenders, we know that all drivers must come under the enforcement of our traffic laws,” Ambode said.
