Policing in Nigeria is difficult - Edo police spokesman

‎The newly appointed Public Relations Officer of Edo State Command of Nigerian Police, DSP Stephen Onwochei, has described the work of policing in Nigeria as a difficult one.

Onwochei made this observation Thursday morning during a courtesy visit to the secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Benin.

He compared the work of policing to that of looking for one sheep among many others, for which reason he said the cooperation of all stakeholders is needed to stem criminal activities in the state.

“The work of policing in Nigeria is a difficult one. It is like looking for one sheep in the midst of many others. You don’t know them, but they know you. That is why we want to partner with you to succeed in our fight against crime in the state.

“You don’t need us, we are the ones that need you. That is why we have come to beg to partner with you,” Onwochei said.

‎Responding, Chairman of Edo State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Desmond Agbama, noted that the role of the media in crime detection and control is one that could not be over emphasised.

He pledged the unsolicited cooperation of the men of the Council to the state command of the police. He however asked for maximum protection of his members from

He however expressed worry over the recent upsurge in killings by secret cult members in the state, noting that their objective and mode of operation is detrimental to the society.

He therefore advised for the engagement of retired police officers and local vigilantes to check activities of the cultists, as well as strengthening Police Community relation associations.
