Sokoto State Commissioner for Rural Development, Alhaji Abdullahi Maigwandu, on Sunday said that the state government had spent about N5.8 billion on the electrification of 550 towns and villages in the last seven years.
Maigwandu told NAN in Sokoto that the aim was to open up rural communities and empower the people to set up businesses to earn a living.
“Our target is to halt rural-urban migration, facilitate small-scale businesses and boost the living standard of the people,” the commissioner said.
Maigwandu advised the beneficiaries to maintain the facilities and pretect them from vandals in order to derive maximum benefits from them.
He particularly called on traditional rulers to sensitise their subjects on the need to regard government property as their own, to ensure durability.
