The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) on Wednesday said it had developed a five-year master plan for tree planning in the state.
Dr Titi Anibaba, the Managing Director of the Agency said this in a paper she presented at the ongoing 7th Lagos Climate Change Summit in Lagos.
She spoke on the topic: “Seven Years of Carbon Sequestration: The Story of Tree Planting in Lagos State”.
The theme of the summit is: “Seven Years of Climate Change Governance in Lagos Celebrating Success Stories, Reviewing Challenges and Setting Future Agenda”.
According to Anibaba, it is good for individuals, states and the country to embrace tree planting.
“Absorption of carbondioxide is more in tropical areas like Nigeria so, planting trees is the least cost effective way of mitigating the challenges of climate change.
“It is, therefore, important for us to emphasise tree planting in Lagos and the master plan will help sustainability of the programme,” she said.
She suggested that individuals could help in saving the environment by volunteering to mark their birthdays with planting trees in their locality.
According to her, one aspect of the success story of tree planting in Lagos is cleaner air as the trees help to sequestrate carbondioxide as they occur.
Mr Hastings Chikoko, the Regional Director C40 Cities Africa, who moderated the occasion, said that it was good to know that, hosting series of this summit over the years had yielded success stories.
According to him, developing the tree planting master plan signifies the sustainability of mitigating climate change in Lagos.
He said that the feat was an indication that the summits were not just talk shops.
