The popular saying goes: ‘Once beaten, twice shy’ but that does not apply to General Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress (APC), presidential candidate.

He has been beaten thrice but he took it in good stride and tried again the fourth time. This time, he emerged victorious and has been named Nigeria’s president after defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party in a keenly contested and tension-soaked election.

Buhari who had previously contested on three occasions in 1999, 2003 and 2007 was repackaged by the main opposition party to narrowly claim victory in a poll that was generally described as free, fair and peaceful.

He won by 15,424,921 to 12,853,162 votes.
