Senator Ifeanyi Okowa (PDP- Delta North) said on Friday that the Peoples Democratic Party had a strong hold in Delta and that President Goodluck Jonathan would sweep the presidential polls in the state on March 28.
Okowa, who is also the governorship candidate of the PDP in the state, made the statement in an interview with newsmen in Asaba.
According to him, Delta state since 1999 has been a PDP state and in 2011 the state voted massively for Jonathan in the presidential election with a return of more than one million votes, a feat it will repeat in March.
He said no other presidential candidate in 2011 got more than 50,000 votes in the state.
“I believe that four years down the line and with the achievements of Mr President in the road, aviation and agriculture sectors as well as in health and education, we are pleased with what is going on.
“The president recently cited a Maritime University in Delta.
“I don’t think that we have any real major competition in the presidential race in the state,” he said.
The senator said that though many parties had candidates contesting the National Assembly election in the state, the PDP would retain all the seats in the Senate and House of Representatives.
He said that Jonathan would win the election in the 25 local government areas of the state.
Okowa thanked the electorate in the state for rallying support for Jonathan, noting that from reports emanating from the 270 wards, majority of the people were routing for the president.
“We are very satisfied that they are doing well and everyone is working hard to call up the votes for Mr President.
“I must thank them and encourage them to continue to work hard and I urge all those who have not collected their voter cards to do so before the polls.”
On the chances of Jonathan in Edo and Rivers, Okowa said “beyond the grandstanding I believe that on the day of election on March 28, Rivers and Edo states will vote massively for Mr President”.
Okowa said that the people of the South-South zone were educated and exposed and know the right thing to do.
