Opportunity knocks for Liverpool FC at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

Just 90 minutes stand between Brendan Rodgers and the first showpiece final of his Anfield reign. A familiar foe stands in his path.

The Reds’ spirited revival, which has gathered pace on the back of a 10-game unbeaten run, has lacked one key ingredient – a major scalp.

Last week’s 1-1 draw in their Capital One Cup semi-final first leg was a tale of what might have been with Liverpool unable to make their dominance count.

However, Rodgers is convinced his side are ready to put that right in the capital and march on to Wembley at Chelsea’s expense. Stopping Jose Mourinho is what is in the mind of Rodgers as he takes the Reds to Stamford Bridge tonight.

“We’re coming off the back of a very good performance in the first leg at home where we should have won,” Rodgers said.

“The only thing we missed was that finishing touch in the box. Anyone who saw the game will think it should have been one that we won 3-1 or 4-1. But we didn’t and it’s now up to one game.

“We’re playing with confidence and we know our retention and speed in the game can hurt any opponent.

“Winning at Stamford Bridge would be important because it would be the final step towards getting to Wembley. If you do that there’s no greater reward than winning it but you’ve got to get there first and that’s the aim.

“The message to the players will be to go out and have no fear. We respect the opponent of course because they’re a very good team but we’ve got nothing to fear in the game.

“We’re a team that’s in a good moment. We’re playing well, we’re working well and we know we can go there and win.”

Mourinho is however desperate to get to Wembley this season.

After blowing their FA Cup chances against Bradford City, Chelsea have a second opportunity in the Capital One Cup against Liverpool.

“This is our only chance to go to Wembley so it is important,” said Mourinho.

“To go there should mean a lot to everyone. We need to forget the FA Cup and think of the next one in a different competition — we are one victory from the final.”
