Oyedepo’s Church Divided Over Prayer For GEJ

Eromosele Ebhomele

Attempts by Bishop David Oyedepo of the Winners Chapel, Ota, Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, to make members of his congregation pray for President Goodluck Jonathan to win the 14 February Presidential election backfired on Sunday when some members refused to stand up from their seats to pray for Jonathan.

Bishop Oyedepo had asked members to stand up to pray for Jonathan who came to the church for prayers to win the election, but some members of the congregation who were not happy with Jonathan’s performance refused to stand up. They remained seated and refused to pray for Jonathan.

This did not however stop the prosperity preacher from praying for Jonathan.

Worshippers and clergymen got more than they expected with the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to the headquarters of the church, located in Ota, Ogun State, western Nigeria on Sunday, when the church was hit with condemnations and criticisms from Nigerians.

President Jonathan, with some of his aides, the Chief of Staff to the President, Jones Arogbofa and the Executive Secretary, Christian Pilgrim Board, Mr. Kennedy Okpara, worshipped at the church during its third service after they arrived the church premises in a helicopter.

A few minutes after his departure, however, the internet went buzzing with the news of his visit as bloggers latched on to whatever they could gather. Many of them ended up misquoting and misinforming the public thus resulting in the outrage that greeted the President’s visit.

Nigerians were provoked by the statement falsely credited to the General Overseer of the church, Bishop David Oyedepo, saying he would open the gates of hell upon anyone who opposed Jonathan’s re-election.

Some of the bloggers even claimed that he warned his church members against voting for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, and that anyone who went against this remains a candidate of hell.

The bloggers’ false interpretation of Oyedepo’s admonition irked Nigerians who saw this as an affront on their mentality and wondered if Oyedepo was God or if he actually had the keys to hell.

While some Nigerians said they were shocked that Oyedepo could make such a comment, others went comic calling him a man of “small gods.”

Unfortunately, however, many of these bloggers and news writers were not in the church during the President’s visit, but they all attributed their news to sources within the church.

Our correspondent who attended the third service of the church which was also attended by the President, his aides and politicians in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from Lagos and Ogun states, reports that the drama however began from the church.

Before his preaching during the service, Bishop Oyedepo had given President Jonathan the opportunity to address the congregation.

Spending very few minutes, Jonathan, who said he did not want to say much so that Nigerians would not think he only attended the church to campaign, urged the members to pray for the country ahead of the general elections.

He said his call for prayers was necessitated by the various predictions by leaders and clergymen about the elections and their outcome.

“There are various predictions concerning the election, but I trust God to take control of the situation,” Jonathan said.

He also commended Bishop Oyedepo for his commitment to God’s work and to education, adding that only through education of its citizens would a country develop and progress.

“I commend Bishop Oyedepo for his commitment to the work of God and education, without education we can’t achieve much,” he added.

While some of the church members were excited to see Jonathan, others grumbled, saying he had suddenly turned to the Winners Chapel after he discovered that he is no longer welcomed at the Redeemed Christian Church of God since a senior pastor of the church, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, is now the running mate to Buhari who is contesting against Jonathan in the election.

Some also whispered that the pastors in the country were not helping matters as they are not acting like prophets and leaders in the Bible who spoke truth to people in power.

After his speech, the Bishop asked that the church members stand up and pray for the President.

He asked that since God always answered prayers of the church members, they should pray for God to give the President the wisdom and strength to rule the country and the unusual grace to lead the nation.

Our correspondent noted that while many stood up and prayed fervently, some sat down, while some used the opportunity to pray for themselves.

I love papa but , my dear spiritual fathergot it wrong on this occasion. He could not stop anyone from woshiping in the church and this includes j goodluck. However papa should have made it clear that the church is not partisan. To balance things up papa should invite either buhari or his vice for similar prayer

All i will say is dat both christians and muslims should not vote religiously and tribalistically. Pls vote for a change enough of the deception, let power change hand. Goodluck doesnt need all these campaigns everywhere if he had realy done well his work would have spoken for him not his mouth. We need action not stories, enough of killings and curruption. Goodluck is d person we watch on NTA everyday, why?? He did not try, no work for graduates yet he keeps creating/building more universities without creating jobs. Lets be wise!!!

I am not surprise about all these irrational minds who are supporting their pastors, you know why ? They are delusional ! They are like Zombies ! They’ve been caged in the permanent position of hypnoticstate, even they can disown their family and possibly their Jesus for their Pastors because is not ordinary !
Some of these Pastors are agents of devil, they use diabolical means to tame their Muggins so they can control them like clickers, if not so how can your Pastor or whoever tells you who to vote for, when we are all Nigerians and we can discern the situation on ground by ourselves ! Please wake up and borrow yourself a brain ! Enough of this usual gullibility.

Why 2000 APC members moved to PDP in Niger

2,000 members of the All Progressives Congress in Suleja that decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party said they dumped the opposition party because they were made to swear by the Quran‎.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors on Monday, Alhaji Abdullahi L. Suleiman, who was a three-time Suleja Council chairman, ‎said they had to leave the APC because the party had no direction.

According to Suleiman: “We were made to swear by the Holy Quran and vow we will abide by rules and directives from the party, which to me shows it is a fanatic party.

”APC is the only party that will make you swear with the Quran to abide by rules and directives of the party, which we did, but when we discovered that it is all deceit, we had to leave the party back to the PDP where we left from.

“We had to return to the party that we can see its structures and development on ground because there is no ward in the 25 Local Government Councils in the state that has not received dividend of democracy through the Ward Development Project.”

Suleiman also stated that the over 2,000 defectors are from 10 wards in the state, adding that more will join them soon.‎

He added that he was not financially induced to return to the PDP but that he returned because of his conviction that the party has better things in stock for the people of the state.
Furthermore, he said people are worried about continuity of some policies of the Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, adding that voting for the APC will mean discontinuation of the policies like paying of NECO and WAEC fees, which is difficult for some parents to pay.
Speaking after he received them into the party, Governor Aliyu said most people who left the PDP felt that the popularity of the APC because of the presidential candidate was going to “catch fire” but when reality dawned on them that it was a party revolving around one person, they had to come back home.
“They had to come back to what they are used to because the APC has no structure,” he added.

MY TAKE ON THIS IS SIMPLE, PM NEWS SHOULD HAVE SHOWED US THOSE MEMBERS SITTING WHILE THEY WERE ASKED TO STAND, I WANT TO SAY HERE THAT I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH AND WE HAVE BEEN PRAYING FOR THE COUNTRY AND THE PRESIDENT ALL ALONG, I WONDER WHY HIS VISIT IS GIVING THE APC PROPAGANDALIST SLEEPLESS NIGHT. THE CHURCH IS OJA OYINGBO TI KO MO PE ENIKAN KO WA, WHOEVER IS NOT HAPPY WITH THE ACTIVITIES OF THE CHURCH CAN AS WELL STOP GOING THERE. MY PROPHET IS A TRU PROPHET OF GOD AND HE IS OLD ENOUGH TO MAKE HIS DECISION BASE ON HIS CONVICTION, I HAVE NEVER NEVER HEARD HIM SAYING WE SHOULD VOTE A PARTICULAR CANDIDATE, THE PROBLEM OF APC AND THEIR SUPPORTERS IS WHEN YOU ARE NOT BUYING INTO THEIR LIES AND PROPAGANDA THEY TERM YOU UNPROGRESSIVE OR ENEMY OF NIGERIA. WE ARE WAITING FOR THEM., AS FOR THOSE WINNERS MEMBERS TRYING TO BRING THE NAME OF OUR CHURCH INTO MUD TO SCORE CHEAP POLITICAL POINT, AND TO JUSTIFY THEIR INTEREST, I HOPE THEY KNOW THE IMPLICATION OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING, I WISH THEM LUCK AND GOOD REWARD OF A TRUE SERVANTHOOD.

Some Nigerian youths seeking the re-election of GEJ are either blind or they are just sentimental. The obvious cannot be denied, this govt has failed this nation these past 6yrs, the present situation leaves us with no other chioce than to ask for CHANGE. Nigeria cannot afford another 4yrs of GEJ, this govt is evil, we have said it severally, GEJ is a curse to this country, everything points to this fact, people die due to lack of security on hourly basis, it means the govt has failed, he has no excuse, he should just GO where he has no answer to the issues and allow someone else do the job, if the sole reason is to serve the people, but no, its for self interests.

  11. Adeyinka Emmanuel

It’s quite unfortunate that we keep running around in cycles. Only a fool makes a promise, and does not fulfill it. wouldn’t it be a course of wisdom to just leave honorably. If you cant perform, resign. Na by force?. Nigeria is a peculiar case. And i hope voters will not be soo stupid to go for a ride all over again

    THE WORK OF A THINKER.

“If Buhari was pictured attending a mosque, and it was reported that the Imam said ‘he would open the gates to hell upon those who oppose Buhari’, and Buhari sat there and said nothing, what do you think many people would be saying today?

If Buhari was pictured going to different mosques and kneeling before Imams, as part of his campaign, what do we think the comments would be?

If Buhari was pictured going on pilgrimage to Mecca, surrounded by a retinue of fawning Imams, what would the response be from Nigerians?

If Buhari invited senior Imams from across the country to a meeting with him, to discuss the elections and his campaign strategy, what would the Nigerian people think?

GEJ has done all the above, and we are told he has a right to do so as a committed christian. Buhari has done none of the above yet he is called a religious fundamentalist with a plan to turn Nigeria into an Islamic nation.

Please examine the facts so we can honestly decide who is acting like the real religious fundamentalist? Who is using religious faith as a political ploy to get votes?

No pastor, Bishop, GO, Reverend Father, Imam etc etc is GOD. They do NOT have the right to tell you who to vote for. Go out there and support the candidate of your choice. Make your choice based upon who will give you and your children a better life and a better Nigeria.”- Bucky Hassan.

TRUTH IS PRICELESS. Vote out the bigots and shame their Prophets and Bishops, tell Oyedepo that God is the God of righteousness, HE is God of all flesh, HE hates corruption and despises those whose watch encourages corruption, usury and insecurity. We shall VOTE the CHANGE ticket and hell will not roll over.

    God Bless Nigeria.

Let APC and their yoruba kinsmen employ all the conspiracy theories they can find in the books, they can never win the forthcoming presidential election. Somebody said the president’s visit to the church has heated the polity and I say thats hogwash. What has the choice of Osinbajo, a pastor in rccg, as running mate to Buhari did to the polity? Cooled it down? It is funny how people, vain as they are think only they have the head to think with. No matter the failure to see the achievements of the president, history will always record it he has been president and that in itself is an act of God. One would expect that if people will talk about change, they would be talking about change for truth, justice, equity that will require restructuring the the country for better governance etc etc not going 30 years back to pull a 72 year old as the last man standing for safety. The way I see it, some people are jinxed never to progress but to retrogress. If there would be change at all, why should it be Buhari?

  19. Anonymous

@JOLLY, thank you for the insight comment and I extend it to some others with their reasonable contributions. APC thinks that media falsehood in Punch and PM News can win them election. Maybe because they do not trust themselves in contributing campaign fund, or do not have a strategy other than heating up the polity with falsehood, or cannot sell their quota system’s candidate (remember the former speaker that had no certificate). The outcome will be that uninformed Nigerians will be killed while they re-strategies for another election after their failure on Feb. 14

PM is instigating and inciting civil War in Nigeria. PM staffs and Editors are anti church of Nigeria and we know this but take note your evil day is very short. President Jonathan still remain Nigeria President until the day INEC declares who become the President after the election.Do you know that President Jonathan has the so right to enter anywhere in Nigeria and any home or Religion of what kinds? Any Imam or Pastor can pray for Jonathan if they choose to.
I can see PM and their co hot is crying woof and this will continue till 2019 whether you like it or not. Nothing any of u can do to bring down the glory of God in any man’s life. If you cannot cope in Nigeria PM please kindly relocate to Ghana. The freedom you enjoy today was enacted by the same Jonathan. Stop insulting God’s prophets and Imam otherwise your end is near because even you die PM continue right. Please kindly ask BUHARI to pay a visit to the same church bcos it the house of God. Tinubu own a house in Aso Rock villa it Buhari win.

  23. Tayo

A good christian should only run to God, yes, going to church is good, but the ultimate power belong to God. If this news report about Jonathan reference to prophecies about Nigeria and election in 2015 is true, then there is something wrong with the christian Faith of Mr. Jonathan. He does not need any prophecies before he goes to church to seek for prayers, all he needs to do is to focus on God, put his faith in Him and all shall be well. Whatever a prophet says, whether genuine or not, God is the final authority in all that pertains to life. It is not impossible, Mr. Jonathan subscribes to prophesies and must be moved to action by predictions which source may not even be of God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Not all men have faith.

Surely politics divides! Its only natural that all members of the Church will not have the same political inclination and affiliation. They are not zombies are they? Members of the Winners Chapel are well informed and smart! Even bishop Oyedepo teach them to make smart choice! And they will come February 14th.
And if you were in GEJ shoes (He has shoes now), wont you go to a people sympathetic to your course? That shows you GEJ is not as clueless as you think!
Overall, let the will of God prevail in our beloved nation. As tough as the cross of Jesus Christ was, he still wanted God’s will to stand. May God’s will prevail in these difficult times.

@Michael: Oyedepo has the ‘Goya oil’ anointing. He wants oil block and of course, Buhari will not grant him a license if he, Buhari, wins. All for self interests

  26. KAYKAY

Nigeria Pastors, actually, Pastor Oyedepo can not judge who go to hell or heaven. How many of his members can avoid the payment of the university, he is a business man in God;s house. Many things is happening in the winners in the last 3 years. God will save we Christians. Road to heaven is not business like because God has his principles which He (God) cannot utter because of anybody. Has he (Pastor Oyedepo) has ever advice GEJ and his govt? Has he not see by himself of what is happening in the northern part of the country?
God visit our land and heal it.

  28. isaac

There is nothing wrong with the president’s visit but the timing is absurd. For now, the nation’s polity is heated up somehow, definitely, people will read meaning to such a move by GEJ. It’s unfortunate, our president hasn’t good advisers. The recent appointment of Fanikayode as the media publicity of his campaign is a flaw. Fanikayode is a man of no integrity.

  29. organic973

Please GEJ visiting the church doesn’t mean he came to campaign because we can’t see the mind to know what’s in it.

PM News is obviusly irked by this popularity that Bishop gave Jonathan.
Therefore they have to counter it in the usual style of their paymaster APC.
Whoever God has blessed no man can curse.
This is part of the global propaganda to pull Nigeria down.
Those who predicted our disintegration are not happy that Jonathan is making effort to keep us one. They use insecurity, they allege corruption they are blind to the reforms going on.They employed American propaganda firm thatcampaigned for Obama.
They are ready to let America in.
    Kerry came test the waters.
The weapons are coming in and instead of patriots to rise above politics and defend their fatherland they accuse their leader of cluelessness. Give him clues if you have and save your country first.

  31. JOLLY

YOU GUYS SHOULD STOP MAKING STUPID COMMENTS GEJ AND GO TO THE GRASS-ROOTS AND STARTS CAMPAIGNING FOR APC, YOU CAN SEE PDP IS DOING THAT. ELECTION IS NOT WON ON PAGES OF NEWSPAPAERS. GEJ IS DOING THAT AT THE MOMENT TO SEEK FOR VOTES EVERY WHERE, AT THE END YOU WILL START CRYING LIKE LITTLE CHILDREN IF THE RESULTS ARE. THIS ELECTION RESULT WILL SURPRISES GMB AND APC.

  32. JOLLY

South-west media, this is the same way you put Abiola into trouble with your propaganda machinery.we all know what is going with your attack on GEJ, whether you like it or not GEJ will continue the good work. THE BEST PRESIDENT NIGERIAN EVER KNOW. LONG LIVE NIGERIA

Let’s watch what we comment here and I want to warn these bloggers that they have to be very careful with their reporting. Bishop is a man of God and he is a god,he has the power to dictate to this nation,i don’t see anything wrong in praying for Goodluck or do u bloggers want bishop to sent Jonathan away from the church? No. Am sure if he goes to redeem church, papa will pray 4him,so let’s us be reasonable with our comments and write up.

  35. judgement day

“He also commended Bishop Oyedepo for his commitment to God’s work and to education, adding that only through education of its citizens would a country develop and progress”
Oyedepo is doing a great job in promoting quality education in Nigeria. The tuition is free and where it is not, it is reachable to common man. What a deceit. It is sad that a FG will now rely on private capitalist to develop our education system while our public universities rot away. How much is the school fees in Oyedepo’s Nursery, primary & secondary schools, not to talk of the universities? How many poor people in his church have their children in such schools? If i may ask, where are we taking all these wealth to? Well i dont blame our religious leaders, religion boom where there is government failure and as long as a moron is there as the leader, our pastors will feed fat, now tell me why Oyedepo will not support a man like Jonathan. But one thing he, Oyedepo, should know is that any attempt by Jonathan to rig and win in a crooked means will not spare his investment. No man of gods is invicible!

  36. Chris Mike

It is very unfortunate that APC has allowed misfits to take over the party.
That the president can not worship in the church again as he used to do some months back is worrisome.

  37. Emmanuel

With the way Our deposit is going, I know he may fall. He talks more of material things than salvation. Yet I don’t blame him, it’s because Nigerians are focusing on the Man of God thereby missing the God of Man.

  38. lemose

PM News is crying more than the bereaved, they have a funny way of twisting stories to suit their financiers interest thereby depriving us of the truth. The church cannot be divided over Jonathan’s visit because every Christian know his or her obligation to civil society and those in authority, go read 1 Peter 2: 13 – 25. It is unfortunate that PM News use comments on social media as a parameter for peoples response to national events.

  39. NomanisGod

This is not news, if you editors in PM news have nothing to report, the remain silence. It’s not everyone that stand up in the church each time the pastor ask people to stand up and pray, so stop politicizing the president’s visit. All you should comment is that politicians are the root cause of Nigerian problem, it’s not the present administration it the politician generally.

What has one’s faith or religious inclination got to do with electing leaders who can meet the material needs of the citizenry? If your son graduated 5 years ago and cannot find a job, is it Bishop Oyedepo that will find him a job or pay the skyrocketing University fees, prevent your daughter from being kidnapped on streets of Lagos or Enugu, equip the military to ward off the Boko Haram insurgents, prevent Governor Fayose from spending N50million on a stupid Advert while Ekiti people are living from hand to mouth?
When would Nigerians learn to separate political Leadership and ability to deliver dividends of democracy from Religious convictions and an individual’s personal relationship with his/her Creator? Angela Merkel has been governing Germany very efficiently for about three terms now but has anybody asked what her RELIGION is? Did she make a noise about getting some Pastor or Imam to pray for her in public? Did she make a noise about going to Israel on pilgrimage or to the Vatican to kiss the hand of the Pope? Only inefficient leaders who do not know their onions need to do that in order to deceive gullible illiterates of herd mentality!

Agiri Omoba, I couldn’t help laughing after reading your views regarding the president visit to the church, and in my subconscious mind, i seance anger on your face while witting your comments, finally i totally disagree with your comments without any intention of disrespecting you. judging from our background everyone has the right and freedom of worship, the president’s visit to the church is inline with his religious belief, just as Angela Merkel has right and freedom of worship or not to worship. The school fees saga, lack of jobs, inadequate military tools to fight insurgency and in general corruption. are all Nigeria’s perennial problem which Johnathan only inherited and is unable or his effort is not enough to curb the already dilapidated structure. school fees generally went higher during Obasanjo’s regime about 1999 when politicians started opening private schools while frustrating the support and development of public schools, Jonathan was not there, Insurgency started about same 1999, corruption has eaten up the Nigerian system long before now. what you should understand is that politicians is the root cause of Nigeria problem. And the solution to this problem is total wipe out of the cabal, it’s not about Jonathan, APC OR PDP it’s about the system and the lay down structures. we must wake up, open our eyes unite and fight the old system otherwise we are going nowhere. enough is enough from this crooked, heartless, blood suckers politicians.
