The Minister of power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, said on Saturday that the 220 megawatts of electricity added to the Egbin thermal station, Lagos, would be re-commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan soon.
He said this while announcing a shift in the re-commissioning ceremony at the thermal plant.
“What we have added newly to this plant is so huge that it is the President himself that can tell the nation.
“Power generation is the backbone of industrialisation and the intention of the Federal Government is to open up the opportunities for industrial revolution in the country.”
Prof. Nebo said that the sixth unit of the Egbin thermal station had been moribund for about 10 years which he attributed to the inability of the previous administrations to inject federal funds into the revival of the thermal station.
The minister said that the current feat was achieved through the privatisation of the plant by the Jonathan administration.
“This is a clear indication that the privatisation exercise is yielding fruitful results.”
In an interview with newsmen, the Chief Executive officer of Egbin Power Plc, Mr Mike Uzoigwe, said that the plant had a capacity of 1320mw.
“What we have achieved here at Egbin is available capacity of 1320 megawatts. Any day we have gas that will support that amount of load that load will come out. But the important thing is that we have the capacity to go to 1320 mw if need be right now.
“Unit six that was recaptured has a steady capacity of 220mw if need be right now,” he said.
He said the company had a good community relations package for its hosts including capacity building for the indigenes.
