Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC-Kano), Chairman, Senate Committee on Local Government, said on Wednesday that he had secured the release of 96 prison inmates in his constituency.

Gaya, who is representing Kano South Senatorial District, made the announcement at the “NUJ Platform” in Kano.

The platform was introduced by the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journaliststo give political office seekers opportunity to showcase their manifestos and programmes.

He said the inmates were released from the various prisons across the senatorial district after he paid their fines amounting to over N600, 000.

“You will be surprised to know that some of the inmates fines are less than N5,000 but they cannot pay due to the current economic situation in the country.

“When I got to know about the situation, I set up a committee recently which came up with the names of the 96 inmates who were languishing in the prisons because they could not pay the fines,” he said.
