UPN resolves leadership crisis, set for 2015 elections

The leadership crisis in the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) has been resolved, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Bari Salawu, said on Thursday in Abuja, noting that, it is prepared for next year’s election.

Salawu, who disclosed this at a news conference, commended traditional rulers, religious leaders and Nigerians for their steadfastness in ensuring that peace was restored in the party.

“We want to assure you that UPN’s constitution has the mechanism for resolving any problem or conflict that may occur in the future, because politics is about conflict resolution.

“We are not bothered about having conflict; every political party has conflict but I want to let you know that UPN has evolved stronger from the conflict than what we were,” he said.

He assured that the party would not disappoint Nigerians, adding that it had become the best alternative party that would bring responsive and responsible government to the country.

The publicity secretary said that UPN was committed to creating employment opportunities and other programmes that would boost national development, if voted into power in 2015.

“We are going to establish free education to attack ignorance and enhance Nigerians’ capacity for development.

“We will also establish free healthcare services and equip our medical facilities for preventive and creative care delivery.

“Our rural integrated programme is to link the rural communities with urban areas so as to empower rural communities and relieve the urban areas of the burden of overpopulation,” he said.

Salawu added that the party had concluded filing of its paper at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for presidential, governorship, national and states’ assemblies’ elections.

He also disclosed that the party would present a candidate from the Southern part of the country for presidential election that would soon be made know to the public.

According to him, the presidential candidate is from the South and the North is preparing to give us a dynamic candidate as running mate.

He also said that the party would present gubernatorial candidates in Kano, Oyo, Sokoto, Zamfara, Delta, Ogun, Taraba, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kaduna, Rivers, Cross River and Benue.

“We want to assure Nigerians that UPN is on a rescue mission to salvage Nigeria from crises,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the party’s governorship candidate in Ogun, Mr Rotimi Paseda, said the party would do everything possible to preserve the legacy and achievements of its founding father, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
