4 in court over theft of kerosine

Four employees who allegedly stole 170,679 litres of dual purpose Kerosine from their company, on Monday appeared before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused, Vincent Akpabio, 32; Eromosele Aisikugweni, 36; Innocent Onoja, 38, and Tony Ilesanmi, 43, are all residents of the Apapa area of Lagos.

They are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Inedu, told the court that the accused committed the offences between September and December at Obat Oil Petroleum Ltd, Apapa.

Inedu said that the accused conspired to steal 170, 679 litres of kerosine valued at N 17,238,579 property of Obat Oil Petroleum Ltd.

“When the company discovered that the accused persons had been stealing kerosine from them, they decided to report the case to the police,” Inedu said.

He noted that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

NAN reports that Section 285 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 409 prescribes two years imprisonment for conspiracy, if convicted.

The Senior Magistrate, Adeyemi Amos, granted them bail in the sum of N300,000 each, with two sureties each, in like sum.

Amos adjourned further hearing in the case till 22 January 2015.
