The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi, on Friday called on Nigerians with integrity and means to join Special Marshals towards ensuring road safety in the country.
Oyeyemi made the call at the 12th National Summit of Special Marshals, its voluntary operational arm, in Abuja and stressed the need for more hands in monitoring safety on the roads to track the volume of road users.
NAN recalls that FRSC has no fewer than 19,000 workers and 13,000 Special Marshals who monitor road activities in the country.
“If about 170 million Nigerians can be special marshals, imagine how safe our roads will be.
“So, we need all of you also. When you are special marshal, you will be able to contribute.
“When the road is blocked, you direct the traffic, when there is a crash, you give rescue services and we’ll move on, the nation will be much better.”
He called on members of the public to emulate the virtue of special marshals in the country, who “are giving to the nation by volunteering to ensure easy and safe movement on the roads.”
However, Dr Sini Kwabe, the National Coordinator, Special Marshals, gave conditions for eligibility to be a member of the body.
“We screen properly to know more about somebody’s background. You must be somebody respected at the community level.
“You must be somebody who can afford three square meals, you have your good work, you must have a roadworthy car and you have no record of criminality.
“Once those ones are done, of course, you are qualified.”
Kwabe, therefore, supported the FRSC boss in the call for more volunteers in road safety service.
