Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, would launch his governorship bid on 26 October, ‎his campaign office said on Tuesday.

The event will take place at the Blue Roof, LTV 8, Ikeja, Lagos, the office said.

Ikuforiji, who is the longest serving speaker in the country since the return to democracy in 1999, said in an interview recently that his experience places him above other contestants.

He said he is bringing to the table a better deal for Lagos residents‎, and expressed optimism that the leadership of the party would back him.

Apart from creating jobs from tourism and knowledge-based economy among other things, Ikuforiji pledged that if given the chance, his government would spend more money on key areas of the society. This, he said, would bring employment opportunities for the youths.

He is not the only aspirant who’s trying to replace Governor ‎Babatunde Fashola whose term expires on 29 May next year.

Many other aspirants have picked up nomination forms and are gearing up to slug it out on 15 November when the All Progressives Congress’ primaries take place.

For now, there’s no sign that a concensus candidate for the APC has emerged, though political analysts say things would become clearer in the next few days.

If a primary election eventually takes place, more than 11,000 delegates from about 377 wards and local government areas would elect the flag bearer of the party.

Details remain murky and the delegates are still vastly unknown to the general public.

But sources say about 26 delegates would represent each of the ward and local government areas in the state.
