Newcastle United are confident goalkeeper Tim Krul will be fit for their Premier League match against Leicester on Saturday despite suffering a “very minor elbow injury” while training with the Netherlands.

Krul, 26, suffered the setback during a training session with Holland on Saturday and returned to north-east side Newcastle before his country’s shock 2-0 defeat by Iceland in a Euro 2016 qualifying match on Monday.

Scans showed ligament damage the club revealed Wednesday, before adding later in the day he should be fit for this weekend’s match at St James’ Park.

“Tim Krul has been further assessed today by the club’s medical staff and the club can confirm that he has nothing more than a very minor elbow injury,” a Newcastle statement said.

“The club will continue to monitor the situation but are confident that he will be available for the game against Leicester City on Saturday.”

Alan Pardew’s side, currently languishing in the bottom three, will go in search of their first Premier League win of the season when they face the Foxes.
