Death of suspected cultist sparks protest in Delta

The death of a suspected armed robber and cultist whose name was given simply as Oghale (alias China), at an undisclosed hospital in Ozoro, Delta State, last Sunday sparked wild protest in the town by hoodlums suspected to be members of the deceased’s cult group.

The dead suspect who is alleged to be very notorious for raping his victims, was reportedly rushed to the hospital with bullet wounds by two men on a motorcycle a day before the protest.

As soon as the duo dropped the victim, they allegedly zoomed off on the pretext that they were going to call the victim’s mother, but never returned to the hospital again.

Following a report of the incident at the Uzoro Police Division, at about 8:30 pm on Sunday, detective operatives from the Division were despatched to the said hospital where they met the said Oghale already dead. He was wearing a T-Shirt with Viking Confraternity Cult group badge, with one live cartridge recovered from his pocket.

According to a press statement issued and signed by Delta State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Celestina Kalu, the deceased was said to be a wanted notorious armed robber, rapist and cultist, whose gang has been terrorizing the area.

While his death caused jubilation in the community, some suspected cultists believed to be members of the deceased’s cult group, took to the street in solidarity, molesting innocent persons and collecting their handsets.

Consequently, a patrol team of the Ozoro Police Division chased and arrested three of them while others escaped.

The press statement said the suspects will be arraigned in court at the end of ongoing investigation.
