Students of the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN, Ilorin, Kwara State, are thankful to the school management for the recent procurement of Ebola-fighting/preventive equipment.

Since the outbreak of  deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, in Nigeria, many Nigerians have taken their personal hygiene serious as well as other preventive measures to prevent getting infected .

Having this in mind, the management of the UNILORIN took a bold step in ensuring safety of its students by installing equipment worth N1.2 million at the university’s health centre.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. AbduGaniyu Ambali, while unveiling the equipment, including preventive kits, said all students will be screened for the EVD before entering the campus.

The kits, he said, include: face masks, boots, hand gloves, automatic soap dispenser, infrared thermometer and disposable bed spreads.

“The procurement of the anti-Ebola kits is part of the university’s preparedness to tackle the epidemic headlong,” the vice chancellor said.

Ambali also commended members of the institution’s Ebola Response Committee for their foresight and prompt response.

He, however, charged the university’s health workers to be alert and follow laid down procedures in the event of an outbreak.

The students expressed different views on the selected centres the equipment would be stationed.

Olayinka Abudu, a student of the institution,  said: “I appreciate the steps they have taken which are in the right direction but they should also place  sanitizers in hostels and lecture rooms, school canteen and on the walkways,” he said.

Mariam Adegbeti, another student of UNILORIN, told our reporter that she is waiting to see that the same measure would be taken to install part of the equipment inside the The PFA Theatre needs.

She said: “All hands must be on deck to see how this measure taken by the school management works out. The PFA Theatre, admission office and other offices within the school premises which usually attract heavy traffic of students should be equipped to prevent any spread of the virus.”

The university’s Director of Health Services, Dr. Mary Ajiboye, who presented the equipment to the vice chancellor, said the kits were for the protection of staff and students.

“The committee would place the hand sanitisers in strategic locations on the campus such as the Senate Building, faculties, walkways and UNILORIN FM studio,” she said
