The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Sunday said that it prosecuted 519 suspected traffic offenders in its Zone 5 Command comprising Anambra, Delta and Edo states.

The Zonal Commanding Officer, Mr Nseobong Akpabio, told NAN in Onitsha on Sunday that the FRSC prosecuted the suspected offenders through its special mobile courts.

Akpabio spoke to NAN during his routine monitoring of patrol operations on the Benin-Asaba-Onitsha Road.

“Out of the 519 prosecuted for various traffic offences, 471 were convicted while 48 were discharged.

“The special mobile courts sat on specific traffic corridors of Benin–Agbor, Iseleuku-Asaba, Asaba–Agbor, Benin–Auchi, Benin–Ore and Benin–Sapele highways.

“Others are Sapele-Warri; Warri–Ugheli; Abraka-Umutum; Ihiala-Onitsha and Ihiala–Owerri highways,” he said.

He said that the road users were prosecuted for traffic offences ranging from dangerous driving, speed limit violation, use of phone while driving and driving with worn out tyres.

According to him, the other offences include driving with expired driver’s licence and expired vehicle documents, and overloading.

Akpabio said that establishment of the mobile courts resulted from collaboration between the corps and the judiciary in an effort to instill discipline in motorists and reduce road accidents.

“FRSC commends the judiciary in the three states for steadfastness, and calls for more of such support as the corps cannot work alone to reduce road crashes on the roads,” he said.

On road safety enlightenment, he said that the zonal command partnered with media houses on regular public enlightenment through television and radio programmes.

“It is the same with print media houses for feature articles on road safety, while staff were deployed to carry out public enlightenment in worship centres, communities, schools, markets and artisan workplaces,” he added.

Akpabio urged motorists and other road users to obey traffic rules, warning that the corps would not spare recalcitrant traffic offenders.

The zonal commander gave the assurance that the corps would continue to improve on its operations to meet up with its 2014 Strategic Goals of reducing road accident by 15 per cent and fatality by 25 per cent.
