The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday in Abuja has denied claims that President Goodluck Jonathan had former Borno governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, on his delegate list to Chad.

A statement issued by Mr Olisa Metuh, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, said the main opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC) was only trying to deceive Nigerians by issuing fabricated statements.

It noted that the opposition party had presented former Borno governor Ali Modu Sheriff as being in Jonathan’s entourage to Chad, “knowing same to be completely false”.

Similarly, presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati dismissed talks that the president was hobnobbing with Sheriff, an alleged Boko Haram sponsor.

“The claim that the President is “hobnobbing” with the former Borno State Gov is totally erroneous and spurious.

But Abati then goofed when he claimed that the picture that sparked the rumour was taken at the airport. “The pictures which formed the basis of the bogus allegation were taken at the airport. Sheriff’s presence was not at President Jonathan’s instance.”

APC had accused Jonathan and the presidency of being “economical with the truth” in its response to the widespread condemnation.

“It is really irrelevant whether or not the President took Sheriff along to Chad or he met him there. What matters and what the entire world saw, through the picture that was widely circulated, was that Sheriff sat in with President Jonathan and President Deby at their meeting. That was the clincher.”
