Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa is set to rejoin Borussia Dortmund for £6.3million two years after leaving the German side.

Kagawa is expected to complete sign a four-year deal with the German giants, who sold the Japanese playmaker to United in 2012 for £12million.

Kagawa’s time at United has been plagued by injuries and below par performances. After failing to fit into David Moyes’ plans last season, he has now been deemed surplus to requirements by new manager Louis van Gaal. The Japanese midfielder has also struggled to impress Van Gaal in the Dutchman’s 3-5-2 formation.

Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has repeatedly made it clear that Kagawa would be welcomed back with open arms when it became clear that his chances would continue to be limited under Van Gaal.

Spanish side Valencia were also interested in the Japanese captain, but Kagawa wanted to return to the club where he made his name in European football.
